Organizations in the Bay Area

Civic and democracy organizations with a presence in the San Francisco Bay Area: nonprofits, bridging groups, parties and clubs, government offices, universities, libraries, newsrooms, civic tech, and funders. Each has a short description, where it works, the principles and issues it works on, and links to its own site.

A listing here is not an endorsement. We list organizations across the political spectrum so people can find them and get involved. Looking for groups working on AI and democracy across the country? See the AI & democracy directory.

How this directory works

Who’s here, and how we label them

Who’s listed

An organization is listed for a region when it has an office or chapter there, has held public events there in the past year, or runs a product or program people there use. Civic tech and statewide groups often count for both. National groups with no local tie aren’t listed for a region.

The AI & democracy list is national: organizations, policy campaigns and ballot measures working on AI, elections and democracy reform anywhere in the US.

Funders are listed when their own website says they fund civic engagement, democracy, or part of the five principles.

Descriptions are ours, written from each organization’s own website, and kept short and neutral. Logos are the organizations’ own, shown so they’re easy to recognize. Claimed profiles are written by the organization.

Leaning

Our best judgment from each group’s leadership and staff, partners and funders, the positions it takes, and what it publishes, applied the same way in both directions. Party committees and clubs follow their party. Groups led by people from different parties, built to bring them together, are cross-partisan.

Government offices, libraries, most universities and nonpartisan service groups are “No affiliation or unclear”, as is any group where the evidence is thin, which includes most of the national list for now. We don’t guess.
